A traditional definition of engineering is: While the definition accurately describes engineering, in practice, engineers are often trained to focus on function. Engineers typically spend countless hours making something work and then improving the design to be more resilient to operating conditions, smaller, higher yielding in manufacture, and/or less expensive. This process has served the engineering community well for hundreds, if not thousands, of years. Engineers have been very successful in their endeavors. Engineers have a great capacity to optimize the outcome of their work to fit a specific goal. For example, men and women fly in space. The common person can travel thousands of miles by plane, train, boat, and automobile with relative ease. The World Wide Web provides information from all corners of the globe. However, we are at a turning point in history! The world as we know it can not continue if changes are not made now. The same engineering process that has given us countless inventions needs to be updated. The engineering process needs to be refocused to optimize not simply on function and yield, but also on environmental impact. Uviri, LLC was formed to introduce environmentally responsible products. To accomplish this goal, energy efficiency, cost, environmental impact, and quality all have to be optimized in the engineering design process. To that end, component suppliers and manufacturers are part of the design process. Uviri, LLC has formed a vast network of relationships that can not only provide the parts and services we need, but also pricing and environmental impact information so that an optimal engineering decision can be made. As more and more components are added to the mix, a clear decision is usually obvious as to the parts that provide the best trade-offs between function, cost, and environmental impact. For example, parts procurement and design are traditionally considered two separate groups or activities. At Uviri, LLC, both of these activities are part of the engineering design process. Component suppliers and manufacturers are also part of the design process. Engineers at Uviri, LLC may test dozens of devices for function in view of cost. Do we save 15% in cost but lose 1% in average energy efficiency for the system compared to the best in class ... yes! Products will not be readily adopted if they are not competitively priced. The components selected must also be environmentally responsible. Do we spend 8% more to remove a cancer causing agent from our products ... absolutely! All these types of decisions can only be optimized by the engineer with knowledge gained from suppliers and manufacturers.
